What is the difference between Pilates mat and Pilates reformer?
Pilates mat exercises are performed on the floor from a seated, standing, side lying, prone or supine position. Use body weight as resistance. Props such as magic circles, weights, bands, and balls may be used to modify or intensify exercise. Pilates mat classes are included with your Harbor membership.
Pilates reformer is a piece of equipment developed by Joseph Pilates. The springs and the assistance given by the various pieces of equipment provide an ideal combination of support and resistance. This allows the participant to focus on and develop individual muscle groups and improve overall strength. Pilates can be beneficial for virtually all ages, fitness levels and body conditions. – from injury rehabilitation to athletic training. Other pieces includes Cadillac, Chair, Ladder barrel, Spine Corrector and more. Pilates Reformer classes require an additional fee to attend.
I’m new to Pilates. How do I get started? Begin with private sessions or the Pilates Introductory Series (returning Fall 2018) before attending group mat or reformer classes.
I’ve taken Pilates mat classes but I’m new to reformer. How do I start with Pilates reformer?
Schedule a private Pilates lesson with a certified instructor and/or take the Pilates Introductory Series (returning Fall 2018) before attending group reformer classes. Both options teach Pilates fundamentals so that you may confidently practice at the studio knowing you are exercising safely and with proper form.
Is the Pilates equipment available for members to use by themselves? No. For safety reasons all Pilates equipment must be used in a class or private instruction setting. If you are a certified instructor or advanced Pilates participant see Courtney for approval to use equipment.
